A scary, parallel world

The Cyprus Theatre Organisation (Thoc) will premiere the play Sourinam by Stefanou Stavridis and directed by Magdalena Zira on Thursday.

The play concentrates on three stories which seem unrelated at first. The stories of everyday problems are set in three different scenes. The first shows a man who goes to a clothing store and is served by a saleswoman. The second reveals a patient visiting the doctor, and the third focuses on four strangers who are trapped in a lift together.

Speaking about the play, its director said “the work’s comic elements are intertwined with the existential anguishes we all face. The unexpected violence and the extreme competitiveness underlie the simplest, seemingly innocent, everyday interactions.

“The author imagines a future world where a mysterious organisation causes feelings of fear and insecurity to seep into society. In this environment terror governs everyday life and an almost state of cannibalism is the likely outcome of blemished relations. In his work we see ourselves in a distorting mirror, we may laugh or we may be terrified.”
