A 16-year-old boy was caught driving on Wednesday evening in Paphos with a 15-year-old girl as passenger police said.

The teen was spotted by officers speeding on Tassos Papadopoulos Street in Paphos just before 8pm and driving without a seat belt on. The car’s left headlamp was off, while the teen driver failed to stop when signalled by officers and ran a red light. He drove up to the Mouttalos area where he and his 15-yesr-old passenger abandoned the car and ran away.

The car, that was towed to the local police station, belongs to the 16-year-old’s mother. She, along with her son and the 15-year-old girl were called to the offices of the Paphos traffic police where the teens were identified as the driver and passenger.

Police are now investigating under what circumstances the 16-year-old was able to get the car and whether the owner had taken measures to prevent such a thing from happening. Investigations also concern driving without a licence and insurance and the fact that the car’s MOT was expired.
