Biden ‘looks forward’ to a new meeting with Anastasiades

US President-elect Joe Biden has sent a thank you letter to President Nicos Anastasiades for the latter’s best wishes after his  election victory, it was announced on Thursday.

According to government spokesman Kyriacos Koushos, Anastasiades received a thank you letter from Biden in response to the congratulatory letter the Cypriot president sent him after his election as President of the United States.

“In his letter, Biden stated that he and US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were taking over the presidency at a time of global challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic and climate change, which transcend national borders and require international cooperation,” Koushos said.

Biden added that he looked forward to working with Anastasiades and the government of Cyprus to address the common challenges facing the two countries and their peoples.

He also stated that he was looking forward to a new meeting with Anastasiades, Kousios said.

Biden visited Cyprus in 2014 as the US Vice-President during the Obama administration.

Biden and Anastasiades have developed good relations since his visit to the island. He had visited Anastasiades after the latter had open heart surgery in New York in December 2018. He had also telephoned Anastasiades to congratulate him on his re-election in February 2018.

Right after Biden’s election, Anastasiades, in a message on social media, referred to Biden his “good friend and friend οf Cyprus.”
