Virtual exhibition on female sensuality

For the first time, the AG Leventis Gallery is organising a virtual 360 exhibition for art lovers to visit from home. Ioannis Kissonerghis’ Depicting Female Sensuality launched on December 21 on a platform taking visitors through every aspect of the exhibition; the artist’s bio, the art and more.

“Keeping up with the needs of our times,” said the gallery, “we are offering the public the opportunity to visit the exhibition from their screens, to discover a less-known style of the Cypriot artist, focusing on themes inspired from mythology and famous works of French artists of the 19th century.”

Kissonerghis was largely linked to the development of landscape painting and its establishment as a genre in Cypriot art. He is considered the first Cypriot artist to depict nature as landscape. This exhibition though is dominated by female nudity, exploring sensual themes of Orientalism and decorative elements of Art Nouveau.

“The purpose of this small digital exhibition,” wrote the curators, “is to shed light on the artist’s early work, which is less known to the general public. We focus on his paintings that draw their themes mainly from mythology or the Bible and more broadly on works in which the female nude is the protagonist.”

Curated by Eleni S. Nikita, Curator of the Cyprus Collection and Katerina Stephanides, Curator & Head of Education, the virtual exhibition is set up in a way that it feels like attending a physical exhibition. The platform it is hosted on presents the paintings on the walls and as you move your mouse left and right the room moves with you, set up exactly as the Gallery is.
