Getting crafty for Christmas

Christmas ornaments, mosaics and all kinds of festive creations can be made this week as part of the very few Christmas events that are still on. These are workshops for those who like to get hands-on and create their own decorations for the holiday season.

Christmas trees made in a workshop led by Sharen Taylor on Friday will be on display at the Hani Ibraham Khan throughout the weekend before participants get to take their creations home.

That’s not all Sharen has planned for the month as she organises regular workshops and classes at her studio. As a well-known mosaic artist based in Paphos, one day before the year is out, on December 30 she will hold a four-hour mosaic experience for participants to build various small creations. Troodos Art ClubBefore that, another workshop is coming up on Sunday at Phini village, held by the Troodos Art Club for a morning of ornament making. “We will be using natural, sustainable materials,” said organiser Alexia, “dried oranges, pine cones, leaves, paper to make origami and so on.

“Leave the hectic rush of the city behind and spend a couple of creative, mindful hours with us in the natural beauty of the mountains. During the two-hour workshop, we will create Christmas ornaments accompanied by glög (Nordic style mulled wine infused with berry juice) and a festive atmosphere!”

Half Finnish, half Cypriot, Alexia created the Troodos Art Club just this summer. Being unable to travel she wanted to create something fun to help people escape the city and get creative. With her artist sister based in Phini, she’s set up a studio for her workshops in the village. When the weather is warmer though she likes to take her workshops outdoors. Landscape painting in the mountains, winery visits with painting and local wine and more activities like that are in her plans come springtime, given than Covid measures are more relaxed by then.

For now, this Christmas ornaments workshop is on the agenda, suitable for adults of all art levels. The only thing to remember is to pre-book and take your mask.
