Coronavirus: 401 new cases, one death (Updated)

One more death and 401 new cases of coronavirus were announced by the health ministry on Wednesday.

One hundred and eighty of the new cases were PCR verifications of rapid tests from previous days.

The death was of an 81-year-old man. He had underlying health conditions but died of Covid-19. This brings the number of people who have died of coronavirus to 85 – 55 men and 30 women – with an average age of 78 years.

Wednesday’s cases were among 4,510 PCR tests.

Of the 401 cases, 111 were detected through contact tracing and 89 were people who got tested privately.

One case is a person who arrived from abroad, 18 were among samples processed in state hospital labs and another one is a person who was referred for testing by family physicians.

Another case was detected during testing in the military camp of the Greek contingent Eldyk.

The total number of cases since March is now at 16,190.

As regards rapid tests, 220 positives were detected among 7,848 tests. These results will now have to be confirmed with the molecular method.

Of these, 22 positive rapid tests were found among residents of two nursing homes, one in Kaimakli, the other in Evrychou.

In the Limassol district, 38 positives were found among 1,303 rapid tests. In the Nicosia district, 77 cases were found among 2,772 tests, in Larnaca 50 tests came out positive among 1,466 given. Nine cases were found in the Famagusta district out of 266 tests and five in Paphos among 413 tests.

Four positives were found among 981 tests given in the wider public sector.

Another 15 cases were detected among 372 people who got rapid tests privately.

At present there are 125 people in hospital with 26 in serious condition. Twelve of the 14 patients who are in the Nicosia hospital’s intensive care unit, are intubated.
