Upcoming festival focuses on videodance

Video has been in our lives for years, decades even. Video cameras, VHS tapes, DVDs, YouTube, the list goes on. This year video has without a doubt become an even bigger – and essential – aspect of our daily routine. The lockdown made weekly video calls with friends and family an ordinary thing, daily Zoom calls became the new meaning of a work meeting and TikTok is slowly taking over the free time of young adults, and even the older crowd.

Beehive Frame 2A new festival is making video a core part of its programme. The 6th Moving Images International Video-dance festival MOVIMA is taking place on December 18 – 20 at Egomio black box theatre with 69 films from all over the world. Organised by non-for-profit organisation Dance Lab Nicosia, the 2020 edition of the festival received 639 applications. From those 69 films, two by Cypriot artists Evie Demetriou and Nefeli Kentoni, will be screened.

The short, medium and long-length films to be screened are from 27 countries. “The films are diverse, innovative and highlight collaborations between different art disciplines,” say organisers. “We are also happy to open a new form of Moving Images – on the go. Our first collaboration is with Goethe Institute Cyprus on December 17. Seven German and international films will be screened at Goethe Institute Venue at 7pm.

“Now, more than ever, video contribution to various art forms is crucial. Modern technology is an expressive tool and highlights the moments of art life but also everyday life which become an inspiring part of the final creative result on screen. New media provide new possibilities for artists, offering them different landscapes for exploration and creation.”
