New services available from Gesy from Tuesday

Additional services will be available under the general health scheme, Gesy, from Tuesday including preventive dental care, out-patients treatment for mental health, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and visits to clinical psychologists and to clinical dieticians.

Registration of providers has started and is continuing, the health insurance organisation (HIO) said on Monday. Names will be available on the Gesy website within the next few days and once the agreements with the HIO have been signed, it said.

Despite the delays because of the pandemic, the HIO is making another decisive step in completing the general health scheme, it added.

The following services will be available:

Physiotherapy: out-patient services that include evaluation and treatment following referral by the specialist doctors, including personal doctors and provided the diagnosis is included in those covered (details will be posted on the Gesy webpage). Gesy will cover a maximum number of sessions per diagnosis a year. There will be a fee of €10 for each session.

Mental health care: Out-patient mental health services that include support and treatment at individual and group level and services at home. Access will be after referral from specialist doctors. Personal doctors do not refer patients for mental health services.

Gesy will cover a maximum number of sessions per beneficiary per year. Patients will pay €6 per session.

Clinical psychology: Out-patient clinical psychology that include specialised evaluation, diagnosis and treatment at individual and group level and services at home. Access will be after referral from specialist doctors including personal doctors. Gesy will cover a maximum number of sessions per year. Patients will pay €10 per session.

Home care as part of community nursing: Access is after referral from the personal or specialist doctor to those who require home care. Gesy will cover a maximum number of home visits per year. Beneficiaries will pay €6 each time.

Out-patients occupational therapy: Services include evaluation and treatment at an individual and group level and home services. Access is after referral by doctors of a number of specialities. Gesy will cover a maximum number of sessions per diagnosis a year. There will be a €10 fee for each session. Personal doctors do not refer patients for occupational therapy.

Clinical dieticians: Out-patient services that include nutritional evaluations, diagnosis, interventions and objectives. Access is after referral from specialists and provided the diagnosis is on the table as featured on Gesy’s website. Gesy will cover a maximum number of sessions per diagnosis per beneficiary a year. There will be a €10 fee for each session. Personal doctors do not refer patients for occupational therapy

Out-patient speech therapy: Covers evaluation and treatment on an individual basis. Access is after referral by specialists and provided one of the symptoms/diagnosis is on the table as featured on Gesy’s website. Gesy will cover a maximum number of sessions per diagnosis a year. There will be a €10 fee for each session. Personal doctors do not refer patients for occupational therapy.

Preventive dental care:  According to the dentists’ association, this covers a free teeth cleaning and a check for children once a year.
