Coronavirus: One death, 182 new cases (Updated)

The health ministry on Monday announced the death from Covid-19 of a 72- year old man and said 182 had tested positive for the virus, 79 of them verifications of rapid test results. Another 125 have tested positive after rapid tests, but these figures are subject to PCR confirmation.

The ministry said the 72-year old who died in the ICU of Nicosia general hospital had pre-existing conditions but that he died of the virus. His death brings the total number of deaths attributed to coronavirus to 49 of whom 33 men and 16 women. The average age is 75.

The ministry said that other than the verifications, 103 had tested positive for coronavirus after a total of 2,461 PCR tests.

Of these 59 were detected after 354 tests of contacts of previously confirmed cases and 14 from 404 tests from private initiative. Two passengers tested positive on arrival from abroad from 368 tests, while 16 were detected after 244 tests by hospital labs. There was one case from 222 tests after referrals and two from 340 tests among workers of Limassol district who had sought exemption from the travel ban which has since ended. There were another seven from 107 tests among Nicosia district workers as part of the same programme, one from Paphos after 134 tests and one from Larnaca after 127 tests – all part of the same programme.

Another 79 were verifications from rapid tests of previous days. Three positives from rapid tests were not verified. The ministry is still waiting for the results of PCR tests after 14 positive cases were detected by rapid test at a care home in Limassol

There were no positive cases after 52 tests among the school population, 86 tests from care homes and 23 tests among Famagusta district workers.

The total number of coronavirus cases since the start of the outbreak in March is now 10,565.

Announcing the rapid tests results, the ministry said that there were 125 positive cases after 5,090 tests – ten in Limassol, 59 in Larnaca (one in a care home) 12 in Famagusta district, 38 in Nicosia  (one in care home),  two in the National Guard and four among health professionals, public and private. There were none in Paphos or the police.

There are currently 127 hospitalised coronavirus patients, of whom 69 at Famagusta general, four in its high dependency unit. Another 14 patients are in the ICU of Nicosia general, two of them off the ventilator and 11 in the Covid-19 ward. There are 26 patients in Limassol hospital’s Covid-19 ward and seven in the Covid-19 ward of Makarios hospital.
