Coronavirus: 262 new cases, hospitalisations rise to 110 (Updated)

Health authorities on Monday announced 262 new coronavirus cases after 5,167 tests, as hospitals were treating 110 people, 10 on a ventilator.

Of these, 28 involve people who in previous days had tested positive through rapid-tests and had to undergo PCR verification.

A further 70 cases were detected through 5,665 rapid antigen tests, which, however, must be confirmed through PCR.

The total number of infected people since March has reached 8,947.

Of the 110 people treated in hospital, 70 were admitted at Famagusta covid hospital, with four in the high dependency unit.

An additional 24 people were being treated at Nicosia general hospital with 12 in the ICU – 10 intubated.

Twelve patients were receiving treatment at Limassol general hospital and four infants, two in the ICU, were at Makarios children’s hospital.

Fifty-two cases were detected in 52 samples collected at two nursing homes, one in Liopetri, 37 cases, and one at Peristerona, with 15 cases.

The ministry said there was no immediate breakdown of how many infections concerned residents.

The health ministry said 126 cases concerned contacts of previously confirmed cases detected from 484 samples.

Eight cases were detected by private laboratories, which conducted 1,351 tests.

Twenty-six were detected by state hospital labs that tested 268 samples and five in 252 samples taken from people referred by GPs.

One case concerned a traveller, detected after 344 tests and eight were found in 1,085 samples taken in Limassol as part of the programme to screen workers travelling to and from Limassol and Paphos.

As part of the same screening programme, two cases were detected in Paphos from 327 samples and one in Larnaca from 175 tests.

Five cases were detected from 430 tests in schools.
