Coronavirus: one more death, 187 new cases (Updated)

The health ministry on Sunday announced that an 87-year-old man with underlying health conditions had died from Covid-19.

The death at the Nicosia general hospital was attributable to coronavirus, it said.

The ministry also announced 187 new cases.

The total number of deaths attributed to coronavirus is 44, of which 28 were men (64%) and 16 were women (36%), with an average age of 75 years.

The  187 new cases confirmed came from  9,527 tests of which 6,304 were rapid tests with 121 positives. These must now be confirmed with PCR.

In terms of the PCR tests, of the 84 samples taken to verify the positive results detected by the rapid antigen test method in the previous days, 56, of those came back positive with PCR.

Fifty-two of the new cases came through contact tracing and 52 from private initiative testing.

Fourteen were from hospital lab sampling and six from GP referrals. Six cases were identified from testing done on workers moving in and out of Limassol and Paphos, and one case from sampling in Paphos town.

Based on the data so far, the total number of cases is 8,685, the ministry said.

From the 121 positives detected with the rapid testing, 70 were in the Nicosia district, 34 in Limassol, 9 in Larnaca, 5 in Paphos and 3 in Famagusta.

Famagusta General is currently treating 64 people, 6 of whom are in the high dependency unit.

In addition, there are 9 patients at Nicosia ICU and 12 in the hospital’s Covid ward. Two infants are being treated at the Archbishop Makarios Hospital in Nicosia, while there are 10 patients at the Limassol General Hospital’s Covid ward.
