Good Samaritan fined for illegal parking after he stopped to help injured motorcyclist

A Nicosia man who stopped to help a critically injured motorcyclist was given a ticket by police for illegal parking, it emerged on Saturday.

Yiannis Christou, had witnesses the 6pm Friday incident in which a 20-year-motorcyclist was critically injured after colliding with a car driven by a woman, 50, on Stavros Avenue in Strovolos.

Christou got out of his car and contacted the ambulance service and he got through to the director, Riana Constantinou who instructed him on how to help the youth until the arrival of the paramedics.

The man remained on the scene and helped the 20-year-old, who is now intubated in the ICU, but when he returned to his car he met a police officer who gave him a ticket despite his explanation.

Constantinou who was on the line at the time, uploaded a post on her Facebook page apologising for the inconvenience caused to the man and offered to pay the fine herself.

She asked the man to contact the ambulance service because she had not kept his number so that they could talk.

“Your action was an act of honour and generosity … if only every citizen was like you,” Constantinou wrote.

Police chief Stelios Papatheodorou was made aware of the incident on Twitter and said they would look into the matter with the attorney-general.
