Coronavirus: 107 new cases (Update 2)

The health ministry on Monday announced that 107 new coronavirus cases were detected among 3,679 lab tests.

These figures did not include the 50 positive cases from the rapid test programme which were announced earlier in the day, as these still have to be verified by PCR tests.

According to the ministry, Monday’s cases concern 73 contacts of people who had previously tested positive to the virus. Seven of these cases, concern residents of Timothio nursing home in Nicosia where one case, also a resident, was reported in previous days.

Eight cases are people who arrived from abroad.

Another six cases concern people who tested privately and nine more are cases detected among samples processed by general hospital labs.

Two cases are people found positive through referrals by family physicians. Three cases were reported as part of the testing carried out in nursing homes. It later emerged that all three are staff members of the Ekali rehabilitation centre in Limassol.

Four cases were detected during tests given to workers, who can travel to, from and between the districts of Limassol and Paphos. One case was found during tests in Paphos, one in Limassol and two in Nicosia.

Two more cases were reported during testing in the village of Arsos in Limassol.

So far, 7,285 cases have been reported since March.

Up to Monday afternoon, 55 people with coronavirus were being treated at the Famagusta general hospital, six of whom in the high dependency unit.

Twenty more patients are at the Nicosia general hospital, nine of which are in the intensive care unit. Of these, six are on ventilators.
