Animal Party calls for probe into dead horse

The Animal Party on Sunday called on state authorities to launch a probe into the death of a horse, whose carcass was found by a passer by in Vretsia village in Paphos.

The  animal’s carcass was in advanced decomposition, the party said, adding that the horse could have been used in the past in races.

Citing information, the party said, there are other ‘abandoned’ horses in the area, left there by their owners, who are unable to bear the cost of their upkeep, to die of hunger and exhaustion.

The party said it has for some time now started an effort in order to shed light on some aspects regarding the issue of race horses and what happens to them after they are no longer deemed as useful and they no longer bring their owners money from betting.

“Because this is about bets and money and nothing else,” the party said.

The party called for a probe into the issue of the trade of these horses, citing information they are usually sold, after their racing years are over, for €100 and usually to people who have no idea how to take care of them.

According to the party, the Paphos district state veterinary services went on site to inspect the carcass. The party called on the authority to check if the dead horse had a microchip and carry out a necropsy to discover its cause of death.

It also called on the agriculture minister to give instructions for a probe into animal welfare at the race track club  and where do these horses end up after their racing days are over. The party also called for a probe into information that these horses are sent to a zoo to be fed to lions.
