Cyclist dies after being hit at pedestrian crossing (updated)

A cyclist died on Saturday after he was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing on the Limassol coastal road.

Pensioner Andreas Iacovou, 62, was hit by a car driven by a 37-year-old as he was crossing the pedestrian crossing with his bicycle on October 28 Avenue near the Limassol municipal garden.

Lifeguards who were on duty at the beach nearby gave first aid to the cyclist. He was then transferred by ambulance to Limassol general hospital.

Despite doctors’ efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon.

According to a lifeguard’s statement, they responded to the accident at around 1.15pm. The victim was thrown about 25 metres as a result of the collision, the statement added.

The car’s driver was arrested and taken to Limassol traffic police. He tested negative for alcohol.
