Coronavirus: 166 new cases on Wednesday (updated)

The health ministry on Wednesday announced 166 new coronavirus cases after 3,529 tests and cases since March now reaching 5,100.

The ministry said 63 were contacts of previously confirmed cases, tracked by the contact tracing team. An additional 65 cases were detected through 1,003 tests conducted privately.

Fifteen cases concerned travellers who had been tested at the Republic’s two airports.

Seven others were detected by hospital labs while eight were either referred by GPs or belonged to special groups who were tested before admission.

The ministry said three cases were found as part of the school screening programme and two by testing conducted by the football association.

Three cases were detected after 309 tests carried out at facilities hosting migrants.

At the same time, there has been a rise in hospital admissions with forty patients being treated at Famagusta Covid hospital, five in the high dependency unit. Seventeen patients were being treated at Nicosia general hospital, five of whom intubated in the ICU.
