Times change for some schools as ministry looks for smaller groups in buses

Lyceum pupils in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts will, as of Monday, start going to school at 8.45am instead of 7.30am to avoid overcrowding on school buses.

The decision followed a meeting at the education ministry on Tuesday to assess if changing school hours would ensure fewer students on the school buses.

Following recommendations by the health ministry to reduce traffic on school buses, Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou and Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos discussed changing timetables to allow the transportation of students in smaller groups “for the better protection of their health”.

Following the discussions on Tuesday, Prodromou arranged a meeting with teachers’ unions Oelmek and Oltek, the Pancyprian confederation of parent’s associations of Larnaca and Famagusta, the announcement added.

Classes in lyceums in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts will start at 8.45 am from Monday and end at 2.50pm though there was no official confirmation as yet.
