Coronavirus: 21 new cases announced on Thursday (Updated)

Health authorities on Thursday announced 21 new cases of the coronavirus, detected from a total of 3,133 lab tests.

The latest numbers bring the cumulative tally to 1,918.

Of the positives, six were found through contact tracing. Three of these were contacts of the coach of Doxa Katokopia football club, the case that was announced on Tuesday.

Two more were contacts of a person working in an institution in Nicosia district, that case having been announced on Saturday. The cluster in question has now reached 10 cases.

The last of these six was a contact of a case announced on Monday, that person having arrived on a flight from Athens last Saturday.

In addition, four cases were tracked at Limassol hospital’s microbiology lab. These comprised two X-ray technicians, a nursing student doing an internship at the hospital, and one person employed at the microbiology lab in question.

Four more positives came from flights: two persons arriving from Monaco on Wednesday; one person arriving from Athens on Wednesday; and one person arriving from London on Wednesday.

The remaining seven of the 21 cases were detected from private initiative.

One of these developed symptoms (fatigue) on Tuesday; the second developed symptoms on Sunday; the third arrived from London on October 1 and later presented symptoms; the fourth had symptoms from last Saturday; the fifth, a female student at the University of Cyprus, developed symptoms (difficulty breathing) on Monday; and the sixth and seventh were tourists from Latvia who arrived here last Saturday.

At the moment, six people with Covid-19 are being treated at the Famagusta reference hospital, one of whom in the high-dependency unit. In addition, two more patients are intubated in ICU at Nicosia general hospital.
