Fires being fought in three areas (updated)

A blaze near Kyperounta was brought under control, the agriculture ministry said on Monday, as forced had to tackle four separate incidents amid high temperatures.

The fire in the mountainous area broke out at 4.45pm and was brought under control at around 6.50pm after it burned three hectares of pine trees and wild vegetation.

Around 57 firefighters with 17 engines, two water-dropping aircraft, two bulldozers, and a number of volunteers took part in the operation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It was the fourth incident on Monday.

Around the village of Vasa Kellakiou, also Limassol district, personnel were fighting a fire that broke out at around 3pm. Water-dropping aircraft and helicopters were at the scene.

At Ergates, Nicosia district a fire that started at a river bank was brought under control after burning a large number of trees.

A previous blaze near Potami village, Nicosia district, was brought under control earlier. It burned through approximately 20 hectares of shrubs.
