Elderly man killed in traffic accident identified (updated)

The Limassol district court on Friday remanded for seven days, the 21-year-old driver of the vehicle which hit 85-year-old Giorgos Theodorou on Thursday, killing him outright.

The court also remanded the owner of the vehicle, someone the driver shared a home with, for seven days.

According to police, the accident happened at 8.45pm in the coastal area of Limassol.

Theodorou was crossing the road when he was hit by the car.

He was taken by ambulance to Limassol hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver abandoned the vehicle on foot but returned when his passenger called him at the request of police officers at the scene.

The driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol but was driving without insurance and a licence, police said.

The owner of the vehicle, who shares a home with the suspect, claimed the 21-year-old had taken the car without his permission and knowledge.
