Coronavirus: Eleven new cases, downward trend continues (Updated)

The health ministry on Saturday announced 11 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 761 and further highlighting the downward trend after just 15 cases were announced the previous day.

The 11 confirmed cases were a result of 3,209 tests. Three were found by contact tracing of 640 confirmed cases, while another positive result was found after 526 tests carried out from people who came abroad. Six cases were a result of people who decided to take the test on their own initiative, of which the health ministry specified 87 have been carried out. The final positive case is from a cleaner at Paphos general hospital.

The 761 cases include 10 found at the British bases.

At the Famagusta reference hospital, there are 17 patients, three of whom are in the increased care unit. All patients are in good condition and two have been discharged.

A total of nine patients are intubated and in intensive care, three in Limassol general hospital and six in Nicosia general hospital.

Additionally, there are four patients in intensive care without a respirator, three in Nicosia general hospital and one in Limassol general hospital. The condition of all patients in intensive care is critical but stable.

So far, out of the 20,000 tests being carried out from front line workers, 1,391 were carried out on Saturday and none tested positive. Since the 20,000 tests began on April 11, 7,890 lab tests have been carried out.

All hospitals except the reference hospital have six confirmed cases in a separate ward.

New data released by the health ministry on Saturday said that up until April 16 of the 17 deaths that had taken place, 12 had Covid-19 as the cause of death. The rest had Covid-19 when they died but it was not listed as the cause of death.

Figures also revealed Paphos is the major city with the highest transmission rate per 100,000 people at 103.1, followed by Larnaca at 98.6, Nicosia with 52.7, Famagusta at 47.7 and Limassol at 18.4. Special mention was made of the village of Aradippou, which has a markedly high rate of 401 cases per 100,000 people.
