The official inauguration of the C2 Paphos satellite casino, which had scheduled to take place on Wednesday, was postponed as part of the government’s ban on gatherings of 75 people or more.
The postponement was just one of various measures to limit the spread of coronavirus being carried out in the district of Paphos.
“We have cancelled the opening of the satellite casino and also meetings and so on. We are trying to undertake necessary meetings very carefully and instead of carrying them out personally, we will do them by Skype. We have even cancelled meetings with the ministries of agriculture on recycling, and the minister of the interior on personnel,” said the mayor of Yeroskipou, Michalis Pavlides.
Pavlides said he was particularly sensitive to concerned elderly residents.
“We have had a lot of calls to the municipality from residents that don’t know what to do, what actions to take or what the general situation is. We are doing our best to try and help them,” he said.
Staff are sharing information about the virus, precautionary measures, and what to do in cases where people are concerned they may be infected, he said. In addition, they are also printing off information and giving it to residents that are particularly worried, he said.
“We want to calm people down and are being very careful to try to help and not create panic. We are talking mainly about older people, mostly Cypriots.”
The mayor also attended the centre for the elderly in Yeroskipou on Tuesday, to speak to residents there in person.
“I thought it was important to see them and giver personal advice, so they don’t feel too worried. I hope that it helped so that they feel calmer,” he said.
Meanwhile in Paphos town, the municipality has announced that due to the measures taken to limit the spread of coronavirus, the scheduled celebrations to mark the anniversaries of March 25, 1821 and April 1, 1955, have been cancelled.
A Paphos municipal spokesman added that no phone calls have been received by residents concerned about the spread of the virus and added that council meetings are going ahead as usual.
“We are following instructions and restrictions of the ministry of health, and are not taking any other special measures. Council meetings will go ahead, and as with elsewhere in Cyprus, the upcoming celebrations are cancelled.”
Giotis Papachristofi, the mayor of Polis Chrysochous, noted that residents in his jurisdiction are keeping informed via the media and are ‘reasonably calm.’
“The council meeting will go ahead no problem, and other than celebrations for March 25, we don’t really have anything big that will affect us planned. Any events will be fewer than 75 people,” he said.
Peyia municipality announced on Wednesday that they are requesting that residents that have travelled to the countries or regions on the government’s list, or are having symptoms, not to go to the municipal offices.
“It is in accordance with instructions given by the ministry of health, the municipality has just announced this,” Linda Leblanc, a Peyia councillor said on Wednesday.
“People need to be sensible and not panic, generally reduce expose to many people and stay at home if they are not well.”
