European films reach the multiplex

European cinema is coming to K-Cineplex cinemas around the island on a weekly basis as of tomorrow. The first to be screened is Mug, Malgorzata Szumowska’s tale about a facial deformity that reveals the shallowness and hypocrisy of rural, small-town Poland, a production that was awarded the Jury Grand Prix at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival.

Next up will be Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno on April 18, a romantic comedy awarded as Best French Film of 2018. Moving away from the lovey-dovey feel, Styx comes along on April 24, a taut moral thriller which traces what happens when self-reliance runs into other people’s desperation. This film is one of the most compelling cinematic attempts to tackle the ongoing migrant crisis and was awarded the German human rights film prize.

The final film to be screened as of now is one that’s created a lot of buzz already as it’s a Cypriot production that’s won awards in the Les Arcs European Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Quebec City International Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival and the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Smuggling Hendrix tells the story of a faded musician who is about to leave Cyprus for a better life abroad, whose plans are turned upside down when his dog runs away and crosses the Buffer Zone.
