Anastasiades to meet Lute on Sunday

President Nicos Anastasiades will meet the UN Secretary General’s special envoy Jane Holl Lute on Sunday, government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou announced on Tuesday.

Prodromou said on Twitter that on Tuesday evening the president had a telephone conversation with Lute and they would meet on Sunday at 10am to continue attempts to set parameters to restart negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.

Lute will be arriving in Cyprus on Saturday, according to Prodromou.

She also had a telephone conversation with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Monday night.

Since her last visit to the island, Lute has held contacts in Athens and Ankara.

Following her meeting in Ankara with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in mid-March, Prodromou said that now that Lute had concluded this round of contacts with the guarantor powers Nicosia was waiting for her visit to the island as had been agreed with President Nicos Anastasiades.
He reiterated that the government does not agree with Turkey’s demand that the talks begin after June.

“The negotiations could have started months ago,” Prodromou told the Cyprus News Agency.

The terms of reference for the resumption of the settlement talks, he said, should also include the six parameters of the UN Secretary General’s framework, including those relating to security and guarantees and the withdrawal of the occupation army.
