Spokesman underlines import of US interest in trilateral groups

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou underlined on Tuesday the political importance of the value placed by the United States on trilateral cooperation among Cyprus, Greece and Israel and the country’s interest in it.

He said the US wants to reinforce the co-operation with its presence as the three countries constitute a guarantee of stability and security in the region.

The spokesman stressed that the US seeks to become part of the security partnership “being developed in our geopolitical area”, noting that this shows the reliability of the security and stability dynamic developed by Cyprus, through cooperation schemes, contrary to resources of tension and destabilisation in the region.

He said the 6th Trilateral Summit among Cyprus, Greece and Israel will take place on March 20 in Israel, adding that in this framework the leaders of the three countries will hold a meeting with US Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo.

“In this way we will basically have a quartet meeting among Cyprus, Greece, Israel and the US,” he noted, adding that in this way the quartet meeting, which took place in December in Beer Sheva is being upgraded. The US was present in that the summit through is Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman.

Prodromou said it is important that the US is seeking to be part of the security partnership “developed in our geopolitical region. This reflects the convergence of interests in our maritime area as regards energy issues.”
