Cyprus plays important role in security of the region

The discovery of hydrocarbon reserves has led Cyprus over the last few years to develop deep and honest relationships with all states in the region through developing trilateral co-operation with them, Cyprus contribution to the security of the region, Defence Minister Savvas Angelides said on Sunday.

Angelides was speaking at a memorial for an Eoka fighter who was killed in 1964.

He said the occasion underlined the fact that the status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable and should not be considered a solution to the Cyprus problem.

“The president has said he is ready to engage in the negotiating process according to the terms outlined by the UNSG. We vigorously pursue a solution to the Cyprus problem as soon as possible,” he said.

“A solution that removes us from the status quo that is based on international justice and the values of the EU, which will lead to the creation of a real, independent and sovereign state free from occupying forces and guarantor powers, for all the people of the island,” he continued.

He said only with unity “can we reach our goal to build a better future for us and our children”.
