Two men jailed for 15 years for trafficking drugs

Two men were jailed for 15 years on Friday after they were found guilty of trafficking around 13 kilos of cocaine and 15 kilos of cannabis and a number of tablets, which they received from Belgium through the post.

The defendants, the court said, together with other individuals had set up a criminal gang whose purpose was to import drugs and distribute them.

It was active between October 2014 and August 2015.

All the drugs came from Belgium in batches, sealed in cardboard boxes, which ended up at the main post office in Nicosia on Prodromou Avenue.

The names on the boxes did not belong to any real individuals but they were collected by another member of the gang who worked at the post office.

Four other individuals had been charged and tried in a separate trial. The postal worker received 15 years in jail while the other three got 13, nine, and two and half years, the latter suspended for three years.
