Recycling collected from homes increases by five per cent

The amount of household packaging collected by Green Dot for recycling increased by five per cent in 2018 compared to the year before, it was announced on Tuesday.

According to data published on the company’s website, the amount of PMD, paper and glass collected amounted to 26,686 tonnes last year and 25,347 tonnes in 2017.

In more detail, 9,603 tonnes of PMD were collected for recycling compared to 8,962 tonnes in 2017, an increase of 7 per cent.

As for paper, the amount was 10,076 tonnes, the same as the year before.

The highest increase, 11 per cent, was recorded for glass collection, up from 6,309 tonnes to 7,007 tonnes.

The quantities for commercial or industrial recycling materials stayed at the same levels over the two years, 38,715 tonnes in 2018 and 38,583 tonnes in 2017.

Since June 2018, the introduction of fenced areas for the recycling of glass in supermarkets and large shops has started, something which is aimed at raising public awareness of glass recycling as well as preventing people leaving their glass next to the bins instead of throwing the materials inside.

To encourage glass recycling, Green Dot has recently purchased 158 new recycling bins, and additional bins are scheduled to be added in 2019.
