Alternative film comes to Nicosia

A festival showcasing alternative films is set to reach Nicosia in its 17th edition. An initiative of the Ministry of Education in collaboration with NGO Brave New Culture, the Images & Views of Alternative Cinema Film Festival returns and promises to be more revolutionary, pluralist and alternative than ever.

All of the creatives to be featured have as a common denominator the exploration of aesthetic and formalistic possibilities of audio-visual art and plot twists of academic film writing. Out of the many to be highlighted, this year’s festival pays great tribute to Guy Maddin, Jean Rouch, Laura Mulvey, Masaki Iwana and Greek documentarist and director of experimental cinema Eva Stefani.

Sticking close the festival’s location, Cypriot elements will again be part of Images & Views of Alternative Cinema Film Festival through visual artist and performer Christina Papakyriakou.

With a dense number of activities running from February 18 until 24 at Ifanturgio, the programme also includes short homages to creators Stan Brakhage, Norman McLaren and Péter Lichter.

Following the same concept previous editions held, besides the screenings, a discussion and presentation forum will take place, while the festival attempts to bring professionals, critics, cinema theorists, artists and alternative cinema lovers together.

Having had a great turnout in previous years, the festival continues to be a platform where cinematography is cultivated in its most multidimensional form. This year the festival will pay tribute to film-makers and directors such as Guy Debord, presented and introduced by Giorgos Ikaros-Mpampasakis, Joris Ivens, Elem Klimov, Artavazd Peleshian, Chris Marker, Pipilloti Rist, William Kentridge, John Waters, Larry Jordan, Jessica Hausner, Chantal Akerman and Bruno Dumont among others.
