CySO to stage more February concerts

With two concerts already under its belt this month, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra has four more classical music concerts in store, ranging from chamber music to evening concerts.

This coming weekend, on February 16 and 17, in Nicosia and Limassol, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra plays With the sound of winds – Mussorgski and Michaelides. Five wind players are set to join forces for an interesting proposal comprising two suites originally written for piano.

Mussorgski and Michaelides have in common the reformed compositions their pieces are known for. Mussorgski’s Pictures at an Exhibition is better-known through Ravel’s orchestral arrangement and Cypriot composer Solon Michaelides’ Greek Suite, which, even though initially written for piano, was later arranged by the composer himself for cello and piano. In this concert Michaelides’ piece is presented in yet another arrangement, preserving however all the grace and finesse of the original work.
Later in the month, on February 27 and 28, the orchestra moves to Paphos and Nicosia for evening concerts of the Russian Masters. Playing S. Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes, which was initially conceived and written for clarinet, string quartet and piano in 1919, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme and his Orchestral Suite no. 1, the orchestra pays tribute to two great Russian composers.
