Police still seeking two men suspected of illegally adopting baby  

Authorities on Friday detained a 47-year-old Filipina and were seeking two men in a same sex partnership suspected of illegally adopting a baby brought by the woman from her country in 2017.

The woman was brought before a court in Nicosia on Friday where she was remanded in custody for eight days in a hearing held behind closed doors.

She was arrested on Thursday after police received information that she had brought an infant to Cyprus on behalf of the two men. The woman initially said the baby was hers but it was later determined she was not the biological mother.

Reports said police were investigating whether the baby was sold to the couple who were permanent residents of Cyprus.

It was suggested that they had been sending the mother of the baby €250 per month. Reports said one of the two men, a Greek Cypriot, and the woman, had been pretending the baby was theirs although it was not clear when all this was taking place.

The head of Accept – LGBTI Monica Ahilleos said she had felt many different intense feelings when she heard the story.

“My first thought is that no one has the right to buy a human,” she said. “I cannot accept such an act under any circumstance since it shows us that the fight against human trafficking is not over.”

However, she added, life’s conditions oftentimes led to the wrong decisions.

“Prohibiting fellow humans to experience their own version of happiness and family creates these conditions of the wrong choices. I think that the victims in this case are three. A child who has no choice and is sold as an object for money,” she said.

There was also the mother who may have no other choice in her struggle to survive and the same sex couple who is not given the choice of experiencing a family.
