Stop has prolific use of colour

Gloria Gallery welcomes the New Year with a new visual collection by one of Cyprus’ most significant artists, Kikos Lanitis, entitled Stop.

With his work, Lanitis shows that our vision is often blurred and though death, the disappearance of civilizations and environmental disaster are obvious, nobody calls a ‘stop’ to any of this because our vision has become blind.

Lanitis was born in Limassol but was raised in in London. He has an interest in experimenting with original techniques and working with various everyday materials. A prolific artist with a passion for experimentation, he creates puzzles of coloured planes and compositions. The defining characteristics of Lanitis’ work are simple geometrical forms, accentuated with explosions of colour.

He studied and spent his adolescence during the 60s in London, a place of maturing modernism with enterprising tendencies and experimentation; from painted sacks set on fire and thrown into the Thames to his later abstract paintings, from Happenings in Athens during the 80s and 90s, there is then a long period devoted to works of mixed media.

At his exhibition in Stockholm at the Mediterranean Museum in 2003 and in the many solo exhibitions that follow, Lanitis concentrates on socio-political messages through his work and his writing. His masterful use of and balance of colour makes his works instantly recognisable and unique, projecting an erotic communion with the aesthetic adventure of art.
