Paphos dam overflows

The Argakas dam in Paphos overflowed on Saturday lunchtime.

The reservoir capacity is 990,000 cubic metres, which was surpassed as had been expected following heavy rainfall in the area.

However, an official from the Water Development Department told the Cyprus News Agency that the overflow and heavy rainfall did not mean the area’s water problems have been solved.

The mukhtar of Argaka Spyros Pelopidas said the dam was built in 1964 at a height of 41m. He said it supplies all the agricultural needs of the village.

A second dam in the Paphos district in Pomos is expected to overflow at any time. That one holds 860,000 cubic metres of water.
