Anastasiades ready to work with UN envoy to restart talks

President Nicos Anastasiades said on Tuesday that he is ready to work with the UN Secretary General’s representative to achieve the restart of Cyprus talks.

At an event held at the presidential palace for UN Day, the president said: “For prospects to exist, it is necessary that all the involved parties understand that what is right is not based on the opinion of the strongest, but on the basis of international values.”

He added that if everyone involved in the Cyprus talks decides to achieve peace, they will better serve the Cypriot people, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

“Due to the unacceptable current situation, it is not just the Greek Cypriots that are suffering, but also the Turkish Cypriots as well.”

The president said that the countries involved are also affected by the Cyprus problem, adding that “there is no reason for Cyprus or Greece to be at odds with Turkey.

“There is no one that wouldn’t want to see good relations develop with neighbouring Turkey,” he said.
He added that Cyprus is too small to have conflicts, and that there is a need for peace and cooperation.
