Urgent need to monitor disposal of used tyres

MPs on Wednesday called on the government to carry out more checks on businesses selling car tyres as the country is still lagging behind the disposal of used tyres which are all too often dumped in the countryside.

The House environment committee announced on Wednesday that they would discuss the issue of collection and the designation of storage points for recyclable tyres, focusing on health and safety risks.

Disy MP, Eleni Stavrou, said that it emerged that there is a very serious problem because there are no provisions in existing procedures for checks, mainly on tyres imported from EU member-states.

“As a result, tyres are being dumped without any control, with serious consequences for the environment,” Stavrou said.

Akel MP Nicos Kettiros said that the countryside and rivers have become a dumpster for used tyres.
