Police arrest driver of petrol tanker with fuel from the north

Police on Friday afternoon arrested a 36-year-old man, after he was found driving a petrol tanker with thousands of litres of diesel fuel from the north, authorities said.

The man crossed into the Republic from the Pergamos checkpoint in the British base area of Dhekelia, and was stopped by Cypriot authorities on the Larnaca motorway heading towards Limassol at approximately 2pm.

Authorities did not make it clear why the vehicle was stopped only long after it left the checkpoint.

The man was guided by police to take the tanker to the Oroklini police station, where the vehicle was examined by customs authorities and found to contain approximately 8,000 litres of diesel fuel.

Police arrested the man and he is currently in their custody.

Authorities are continuing their investigations.
