Court date for suspect found smuggling man in boot (updated)

A man and a Syrian national he was smuggling from the north will appear in court on September 5 for a hearing, police said on Tuesday.

The man, 56, was arrested on Monday night at the Ayios Dometios checkpoint after he allegedly tried to smuggle the Syrian man, 47, in the boot of his car, while returning to the Republic from the north.

According to the police, the 56-year-old paid a €5,000 bail fee, while the 47-year-old will remain in custody until the court date.
