University placements announced

In total 2,263 high school graduates have secured places in state universities in Cyprus and Greece, it was announced on Friday.

According to the permanent secretary of the education ministry, Egly Pantelaki, who announced the results of the Pancyprian exams for those who sought entry to state universities, 1,447 candidates got into the University of Cyprus, 659 to the Technical University (Tepak), 95 to the Higher Hotel Institute and 62 to military academies in Greece.

Despite average grades being low, 15 candidates scored an overall 20, which is the top grade. They are Marilia Karmioti, Maria Dimitriou, Maria Masoura, Xenios Papageorgiou,  George Takousis, Avgoustinos Ioannou,  Marina Kokkinou,  Eleni Kokkinou, Raphael Dimitriou,  Andreas Kalavas,  Nicolas Avgousti, Stavros Laos,  Eleftheria Kelekidou, Stylianos Stylianou and Natalie Theodosiou.

Based on data from the education ministry, the average in modern Greek is 9.94, in ancient Greek 9.16, in Latin 8,4, in English 9,61, and in core maths 8,58.

Those that have expressed interest in Greek state universities will be informed at a later stage, when the education ministry of Greece will announce the allocation of seats. Of the 7,700 candidates who took the Pancyprian exams this year, 5,683 expressed interest in a university place in Cyprus or Greece.
