Arrest after explosive devices allegedly found in home

Police on Thursday arrested a 40-year-old man after finding explosive devices in his Nicosia home, they said.

Iosif Iosif, alias ‘Sifis’, was expected to appear in a court on Friday where police will request that he be remanded in custody.

Executing a search warrant, police found in Iosif’s house a standard detonator, a factory-assembled electric detonator, 12 electric matches, two slow-burning fuses, and a remote-controlled electronic detonator.

Earlier, police had placed under arrest Alexis Mavromichalis, alias ‘Alexoui’, after searching his residence on the strength of a court warrant.

According to a police statement, on the premises police found security cameras which, in violation of the law, were recording public space outside the residence.

Mavromichalis, who has had run-ins with the law, was released later in the day.

He posted on his Facebook account: “Gents, apologies for the illegal cameras I had installed in my home. It seems that when you used to call me to tell me that I was in danger and advised me to take safety precautions, you must have been talking about condoms and sunscreen.”
