Late drama as Apoel win Cyprus championship

Apoel won the Cyprus football championship on Saturday night after a 2-1 win over Anorthosis at the GSP stadium in Nicosia.

The result leaves Apoel four points clear of second-placed Apollon, who face Omonia in their final game on Sunday.

Apoel knew anything other than a win over Anorthosis would have left the door open for Apollon to pip them to the title, and they get off to a bad start when Miguel Palanka opened the scoring for the visitors after 25 minutes.

Apoel equalised through Emilio Nsue two minutes before half-time before Mickael Pote became the hero when he scored a dramatic winner just two minutes from time as Apoel sealed their sixth straight title.
