The captivating movement of a school of fish

Sculptor Giorgos Kipris will celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow with art lovers who will join him to celebrate the opening of his solo exhibition Vortex at Gallery Kypriaki Gonia in Larnaca.

The exhibition, which will include six sculptures by the artist, centres around the idea of the collective movement that a school of fish make. Kipris managed to study this phenomenon during his regular diving expeditions. His observation of their movement, of their somewhat dancing formation, was something that he could not stay indifferent to. This interest turned into a study of fish and how they move in order to migrate or just move as if forming a whirlpool for protection.

Speaking about his study of how fish move, Kipris said “how could I not be touched and interested by the rhythms that a school of fish create while they try to escape predators?”

Kipris, who is from Cyprus but who lives in Santorini, studied at the Sarafianou school in Athens and at the Istituto Statale d’Arte Ceramic in Italy. He has had solo exhibitions in Greece, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, America and Cyprus. He has also participated in group exhibitions in a number of countries around the world. Apart from producing sculptures, he also publishes articles in art magazines and designs jewellery and ceramics.
