Minister tries out new ‘smart’ bus ticket

Transport Minister Marios Demetriades on Monday tried out the new smart ticket system that is being currently installed on public buses.

Demetriades received his smart card from the bus station outside the Nicosia general hospital, boarded bus 158 and arrived at the bus terminal in Solomou square in the city centre.

The minister said that the installation of the system, which is to be gradually implemented in all districts, is nearing completion. Passengers will be able to credit their smart card according to their preferred routes and choose electronically which type of tickets suits them best (single/multiple routes, weekly/monthly/etc).

The systems that will read these cards are expected to be installed on the entire bus fleets of the Nicosia and Limassol public transportation companies within the month.
