Kofinou staff strike

Staff at the Kofinou asylum seeker reception centre belonging to the PEO trade union held a strike on Friday over delays in getting paid.
The staff, which belongs to the Kofinou volunteerism council, said they haven’t received their November salaries because the state’s asylum service hasn’t yet transferred the money to the council.
They were also worried about the future as the government plans to privatise the centre, they said.
According to a statement issued by the union, the staff works under bad conditions with a lot of stress and the uncertainty of what the future will bring since the government has, since June 2015, invited bids for the privatisation of the centre, taking it away from the council.
The union urged the government to end efforts to privatise the centre and also pay the salaries on time.
