Moving on from dance to expressive art

Every year the No_Body Festival/ Moving On festival opens up a world of dance for audiences in Nicosia for two days, and this year the door to where dance is king will be open next weekend.

The ninth festival of its kind, organised by Dancehouse Lefkosia and Dance Gate Lefkosia-Cyprus, will host 20 artistic groups and artists at Dancehosue Lefkosia. This year the format of the festival has changed to include a Performance part and a Move 5 part. The Performance presentation will take place on Saturday, December 2 from 7.30pm and will include group interdisciplinary performances presented by choreographers, dancers and other related performance artists.

The Move 5 (new) format – which will be presented on Sunday, December 3 as of 7.30pm – has been included to present dance as an artistic expression based on five-minute presentations, that will allow upcoming dancers and choreographers to promote the diversity of the body and expressionism in movement.

A full programme of performances can be found at www.facebook.com/events/889300967919482/.

The festival is presented under the auspices of the Mayor of Nicosia, in cooperation with Municipality of Nicosia and is supported by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education.

Parallel events will take place between December 1 and 16 in the framework of the Urban Emptiness Nicosia project in collaboration with the Cultural Studies and Contemporary Arts Lab of the European University Cyprus and will include workshops, exhibitions, presentations and other actions.

Urban Emptiness Nicosia will take place at the Nicosia Old Municipal Market, Point Centre for Contemporary Art and Dance House, and will bring together artists from the US, Puerto Rico, Japan, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, UK, Holland, Catalonia, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Greece and Cyprus.

The project will explore the interconnection among walking and new media in digital and physical space with interdisciplinary performances, dance – movement – walking workshops and a complementary exhibition (which will run until December 16) of video and sound pieces, mapping and walking related indoor/outdoor installations, documented walks, simultaneously happening in Nicosia and other cities.

The aim of the project is to generate collective experiences and document the diverse processes within the urban landscapes contributing to the dialogues and practices of the Urban Emptiness Network, investigating silence and emptiness in contemporary cities, through parallel and simultaneous actions in New York, Brussels, Athens and Edinburgh.

Special attention will be given to the exploration of the city of Nicosia, its people’s everyday actions and to negotiations of city spaces revealing their potentiality and hidden qualities.

The project will begin on December 1 at 7.40pm at the Nicosia Old Municipal Market, where a presentation of the project will be given by curators Geert Vermeire and Sophia Hadjipapa-Gee.

All events are free of charge but in order to take part in any workshops related to the project, register your participation by sending an email to [email protected].
