Almost half of all vehicles running with a faulty tyre

A significant percentage of motor vehicles in Cyprus are running on tyres that are either not pressurised correctly or are worn, leading to an increased risk of accidents, a nationwide survey has shown.

Forty-six per cent of passenger cards examined had at least one tyre that was not properly pressurised. This also applied to 42 per cent of 4x4s, 39 per cent of pickup trucks, and 47 per cent of trucks.

The survey was carried out by the Reaction NGO, in collaboration with the police and LP Frangeskides Ltd. (Michelin).

Also, over 46 per cent of 4x4s surveyed in Nicosia had at least one worn tyre. The corresponding percentage for Larnaca was 38 per cent.

And 77 per cent of trucks and 31 per cent of pickup trucks in Nicosia had at least one worn tyre.

As part of the survey, unannounced on-the-spot checks were carried out on buses used for public transportation and on taxis based at Larnaca airport.

Other than reducing the risk of accidents, the proper maintenance of tyres is also more fuel-efficient.
