Man arrested after stolen fishing rods found in his luggage

Police announced on Thursday they arrested a man on Wednesday suspected of stealing from residences and shops in Paralimni and Ayia Napa.

A 37-year-old resident of Ayia Napa reported that on Wednesday morning nine tuna fishing rods equipped with machinery, which are worth €1,500, were stolen from his house.

After investigating, officers at the scene concluded that a British man staying at a hotel in Ayia Napa who was due to leave the island the same day was probably involved in the theft.

The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at a garden centre in Paralimni at 12.30pm.

In his luggage, which had been left in the reception area of the hotel, items were found which didn’t belong to him.

When questioned, he admitted that some of the objects were stolen from houses and shops in the area.

He also talked about specific sites, including the residence of the 37-year-old whose fishing rods were among the items police officers found in the luggage.
