Large quantity of cigarettes and tobacco seized by customs

Greek Cypriot customs officers on Sunday seized a large quantity of cigarettes and tobaccos being smuggled in from the north at a a crossing point in Nicosia. The suspect involved, a man from Limassol was detained.

According to customs, the car was carrying 75 cartons of packets 200 cigarettes of various brands as well as 42 kg of rolling tobacco – 30 kg of Old Holborn 12 kg of Golden Virginia.

Preliminary investigations showed that the contraband had originated in the north.

The Greek Cypriot man was arrested for on suspicion of fraudulent evasion of duties and taxes and the illegal possession of duty-free goods. The value of unpaid taxes and duties was €13,000.

The man’s car was also confiscated. He has reportedly been arrested in the past on similar charges and was expected to be remanded by the Limassol court later on Sunday.
