Promoted Huddersfield Town extended their unbeaten record after three games of the Premier League season but could not manage a third successive win as visiting Southampton held out for a goalless draw.
Seven points was still enough to put the Yorkshire side on top of the table on goal difference, at least until Manchester United play Leicester City in the late game.
Huddersfield were the better side but goalkeeper Fraser Forster kept them at bay with saves from new signings Steve Mounie and Tom Ince.
Nathan Redmond wasted two chances for the visitors, who otherwise failed to trouble the Town defence until the last minute, when Ryan Bertrand’s effort was cleared off the line.
They also remain unbeaten after three games.
Elsewhere, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez reached a milestone of 500 Premier League points after Spanish striker Joselu, defender Ciaran Clark and Aleksandar Mitrovic gave them a 3-0 home win over West Ham.
The Magpies chalked up their first points of the campaign but the result did not make happy reading for the Hammers, who suffered a third defeat in successive opening league games for the first time since the 2010-2011 season, when they were relegated.
Joselu fired Newcastle ahead in his first start for the club with a 36th-minute goal of the highest quality, capping a fine move as Mikel Merino released Christian Atsu and the Ghana winger squared the ball into the heart of the penalty area.
Clark headed in a superb Matt Ritchie cross from the right in the 73rd minute to make it 2-0 and late substitute Mitrovic put the icing on the cake when he rounded West Ham keeper Joe Hart and stroked the ball into an empty net.
Watford meanwhile played with 10 men for three quarters of the game but held on comfortably for a 0-0 draw at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Uruguayan defender Miguel Britos was sent off for a wild tackle on Anthony Knockaert midway through the first half, home manager Marco Silva responding by subbing the skilful Nordin Amrabat for defender Craig Cathcart.
Watford’s plans were undermined again when Cathcart was injured and had to be replaced by Andre Carrillo for his debut having signed on loan from Benfica.
Either side of Britos’ red card Brighton hit the woodwork, first with Knockaert then through Tomer Hemed, but they struggled to carve out opportunities against a Watford side who defended deeply.
Teenager Tammy Abraham scored his first Premier League goal with Swansea City’s first shot on target this season before Jordan Ayew’s second-half strike sealed a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
The 19-year-old Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, volleyed in Leroy Fer’s cross on 44 minutes after a tepid first half at Selhurst Park.
Ayew then latched on to a through ball after error-prone defending by Palace before rounding goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and poking the home on 48 minutes.
The home side sprung to life when French midfielder Yohan Cabaye was brought on in the second half but with few clearcut chances, Palace never really looked like avoiding their third successive loss of the season.
