Call for blood donations

More blood donations are needed to see hospitals through until the end of August, the health ministry announced on Monday, calling on new and regular blood donors to give blood.

With so many people on holiday until August 26 less blood is available, the ministry said.

In its announcement the ministry’s blood centre thanked all those who have already given blood during the holiday season and made sure there were sufficient quantities.

“This offer translates into improving the quality of life of many of our patients and in many cases it has been crucial to saving lives,” the statement concluded.

This is the second time this month the centre is asking for help from the public.

In Nicosia, donations can be made at the Engomi health centre from 7.30am until 8pm. For donations the centre is also open on Saturdays from 8.30am until 1.30pm.

Elsewhere blood can be donated at the blood banks of general hospitals from 7.30am until 2pm except during weekends.
