Famagusta residents call for return of Varosha

Residents of the fenced off town of Varosha in Famagusta on Monday called for the recommencement of the settlement talks.

Following a meeting at the Famagusta municipality’s cultural centre in Dherynia to mark the 43rd anniversary since the capture of Varosha by the Turkish troops, the municipality adopted a resolution on the recommencement of the talks.

“This process is the only way for a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus problem that will lead to the reunification of the island and the smooth coexistence of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins,” the resolution said.

The municipality also reiterates its support to the efforts of President Nicos Anastasiades in achieving a comprehensive solution and called on the international community to intensify efforts for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 550/1984 and 789/1992 on the return of  Varosha to its rightful owners.
